Nick keeps the dates. He is the reason the rest of us still know which Saturday is which. He will send a note midweek about wool, water, and who is bringing the saw.
Kate is his wife. He has a daughter who, he says, would love the lakes someday. Someday has not been these weekends. The Discovery is the family boat in theory and the club boat in practice. It is scuffed, honest, and always the last one strapped down.
He is quieter on the water than he is over a map. When the wind comes up he looks pleased, as if a problem had finally arrived that a list might solve.
